Q: dōTERRA’s essential oils carry the mark CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. What does the mark mean?

A: Although there are good essential oils available to consumers, many products claiming to be essential oils often are not pure aromatic extracts and often contain fillers and non-aromatic compounds. Furthermore, there are no current regulatory standards for the descriptive use of the “therapeutic grade” for products labeled as essential oils.

The CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® mark represents dōTERRA’s own internal standards for sourcing and testing 100% pure aromatic botanical extracts using independent laboratory analysis. The dōTERRA brand and registered CPTG mark represent dōTERRA’s guarantee of 100% pure essential oil extracts that meet high standards for both purity and material composition and for accurate product labeling.

Q: Why do your essential oils smell so much better than other essential oils on the market that claim to be therapeutic grade?

A: Aroma is an excellent indication of true purity. A 100% pure essential oil will elicit powerful emotional responses and will not be overbearing in any one note. Many people have described dōTERRA’s CPTG essential oils as "sweet" or "extremely pleasing fragrances". This is because when plants are grown in a region in which it is indigenous, with proper nutritive soil conditions, air quality, weather/moisture, are harvested at the right time and carefully distilled, the essential oil extract will be pure and of the highest quality, thus having a fragrance that exceeds that of oils that have been diluted or synthetically produced.

Unfortunately, there are many essential oils on the market that claim to be "therapeutic grade", "100% pure", or "100% natural" that do not follow strict standards for purity and potency. The best way for a consumer to know the quality and value of any product is to experience it for themselves.

Q: Do you grow your own plants and own your own farms?

A: We have found that a primary key to superior essential oil quality is the location in which the plant is grown. For this reason, we carefully source our essential oils from all over the world, rather than from a few locations that are not native habitats for the plants.

For example, our Lavender is grown in the high altitudes of France, our Lemon comes from Italy, and our Frankincense is sourced from Oman. Because our management team is trusted and respected by global producers, we are able to secure precious crops for essential oil production from preferred suppliers.

Q: Are dōTERRA’s essential oils organic?

A: dōTERRA’s CPTG essential oils exceed industry standards. Because organic certification varies from country to country, province to province, and in the US, from state to state, it is not currently possible to acquire all oils under certified organic status.  However, through the GC/MS analysis process, we are able to determine if any chemical residue exists in the essential oil, e.g., pesticides, herbicides, extenders, and solvents.  With this rigorous analysis process, we are able to ensure that all CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade™ essential oils offered by dōTERRA are absolutely pure as nature intended and a step above organic.

Q: What is a diffuser and how does it work?

A: dōTERRA’s exclusive essential oil diffuser uses highly efficient real time ultrasonic atomization technology to effectively diffuse our essential oils into the air.  They essential oils are atomized into minute ion particles and active oxygen anions, which are more easily absorbed by the human body than conventional thermal diffusers.

The dōTERRA Lotus diffuser/Aroma Lite diffuser uses modern air purification technologies such as nanosilver filtration, cold catalyst filtration, active carbon filtration, electrostatic filtration, and so on.  This ensures that the active ingredients in our essential oils are completely discharged allowing it to naturally release the full efficacy of the oils aroma-therapeutic effect.  The atomized moisture contained in the mist also helps skin retain its moisture and is especially suited for air conditioned room and dry environments.

Q: Do essential oils have an expiration date?

A: dōTERRA has a lifetime shelf life if cap is sealed.  Once opened essential oils will eventually loose some of the therapeutic properties over time due to exposure and oxidation to the outside air, however, dōTERRAessential oils unlike nearly all oils on the market will hold its integrity for life if the container has not yet been opened.  Great for emergencies and storage!!

Q: Are the oils safe to use on my children?

A: Yes. There are some essential oils that you may need to use with extra precautions on children so dilute as necessary. Download your FREE Reference Guide to oils that may to understand when dilution and application is different.

Q: Are essential oils effective for mental health?

A: Yes! Essential oils such as Frankincense or sandalwood contain a naturally occurring chemical constituent that can go beyond the blood brain barrier and affect the brain to help cure diseases such as Alzheimers, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis,  and Lou Gehrig’s.

Essential oils can be a powerful key to help unlock and release emotional trauma, alleviate ADHD, nervous disorders, depression, addiction, and so forth by calming the mind.

Q: Do I have to dilute the oils before applying them topically?

A: Dilution is not required for most people.  However, each person’s skin is different, and each person’s tolerance or sensitivity to the oils will vary.  Some oils are very mild like Lavender, and can be applied without dilution on most people. On Guard however, will probably require some dilution. Start out by diluting the oils, or by applying a small amount to the wrist.  If it begins to burn apply a carrier oil to help dilute it.  Dilution is a good practice for young children. Download your FREE Reference Guide to oils that may to understand when dilution and application is different.

Q:  What should I use to dilute the oils for topical application or to calm the skin when using a more intense oil?

A: dōTERRA’s Fractionated Coconut oil is the best carrier you can use to calm a hot oil on the skin and/or for sensitive areas like eyes that may been exposed to the oils.  It is extremely soothing and moisturizing.  FCO will not clog pores, is not greasy like most vegetable oils and is feather light. It will never go rancid is odorless, colorless, and will never stain. Great for kids and massage!

Another option for reactive tissues with oils is olive or vegetable oil to soothe it quickly when FCO is not on hand.

Q: When applying multiple oils do I need to wait between applying each oil, or can I apply one immediately after the other one?

A: You do not need to wait between applications of the different oils. They can be applied immediately on top of each other.
